Coppertone Recalls Sunscreens Containing Benzene

The popular sunscreen maker Coppertone has issued a voluntary recall of five aerosol sunscreen products due to the presence of benzene. Benzene is a chemical that can cause cancer after repeated exposure.

The company announced the recall stating several types of sunscreen and has advised that consumers immediately stop using the listed products, which were manufactured between Jan. 10 and June 15.

According to the recall notice posted on the Food & Drug Administration’s website, the affected products were sold at retailers nationwide and include: Pure & Simple SPF 50, Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50, Pure & Simple Baby SPF 50, Sport Mineral SPF 50 and travel-size Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 50.

Coppertone made a statement saying that it has “not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.”

This recall coincides just over two months with another company; Johnson & Johnson, who  recalled select Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreens in July after low levels of benzene were similarly found in products.

Benzene is a widely used chemical that’s present throughout the environment. It is known to cause cancer after repeated exposure. If a high enough level of exposure takes place it can damage the immune system, and inhibit cells from proper functioning. This is all according to the CDC.

The chemical’s effects depend on if the product was inhaled, ingested or gets on skin and clothing. Symptoms including dizziness, irregular heartbeat, convulsions and even death have been reported.

A recent report by the Connecticut-based company Valisure found several popular sunscreen products have been contaminated with benzene.

Valisure tested 294 batches from 69 companies finding 78 sunscreens and after-sun care products that contained benzene.

Valisure’s citizen petition demanded the FDA  recall 40 sunscreen and after-sun care products containing the higher levels of benzene. The brands include Neutrogena, Sun Bum, CVS Health and Fruit of the Earth.

  1. Hi , my name is Tjaden Cambre . I used Zantac for a couple of years for acid reflex, heartburn. Etc… . It was so bad that I went to my Dr. And he started me on Prilosec. I took that for a year then after I he started me Protonic. But I have always went to the corner store right by me and get medicine for acid reflux , are heartburn and Zantac was the 1 that would work Thebes so I would take it over any over the counter medicine. I can say that I took Zantac for approximately 6-8 years everyday some times it would be twice a day ..
I haven’t got any test to see about any cancer . I’ll have to see if my ex- would look in her bank account statements and see if she can find anything that can help me where I can prove that I took that medicine
( A LOT , A VERY VERY LOT ) I KNOW THAT I CAN GET DOCUMENTS FROM MY OLD DR. ABOUT THE PROTONICS
AND PRILOSEC ) . I don’t know if this would help but I’m just trying to put forth an effort. Thanks and I appreciate 🙏 to whom it may concern..
