What is Wrong with the Earplugs?

An investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice found that the earplugs issued to service members were too short for proper insertion into the ear canal. Due to the short length of the plugs, they are prone to losing their seal with the ear. When this seal breaks, service members’ ears are vulnerable to loud noises. Service members wearing these earplugs likely would not have realized that their ears were not protected properly. Defective/ineffective earplugs may pose several dangers to the hearing of the men and women in military service. For example, during combat and training, service members may be exposed to dangerous noise levels from gunfire, aircraft, tanks, heavy equipment, or roadside bombs. These earsplitting noises potentially cause permanent hearing loss and, in some cases, complete deafness.

Whistleblower Lets the Public Know the Truth About the Earplugs

In 2016, the earplug maker Moldex-Metric Inc. allegedly filed a whistleblower lawsuit against 3M, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Moldex-Metric claimed the short length of the earplugs caused the plugs to “loosen imperceptibly” while in use. The loosening of the earplugs was allegedly so subtle that, in many cases, the service members were completely unaware that anything was wrong with their earplugs. The wearing of the faulty plugs during combat and training allegedly caused hearing loss.

The Terrifying Reality of Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of noise or ringing in the ears, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ringing, buzzing, humming, roaring, hissing, clicking sounds ranging between high and low pitches are some examples of the types of phantom noises associated with tinnitus. These phantom sounds may be constant or spontaneously happen intermittently. The side effects of tinnitus can include fatigue, stress, sleeping problems, trouble concentrating, memory problems, depression, or anxiety. It can be frustrating, distracting, or even debilitating to sufferers of this terrifying condition.
